How long have you worked at Beeston Shenton?
1 year and 2 months
What do you do?
Wills, Inheritance Tax planning, Probate, Estate Administration, setting up and managing trusts,
Lasting Powers of Attorney and court or protection work.
Most commonly asked questions in your specialism:
Why do I need a Will?
What is a Grant of Probate?
How can I protect my home from care fees?
How much will this cost?
What are the most important things to think about when writing a will?
Who to appoint as Executors; this is an onerous task and should be undertaken by someone
who is reasonably financially astute, over 18 and will be able to deal with the responsibility.
Who to appoint as Guardian of your infant children if you and your spouse/partner die
together, this will normally be the people who they would go to live with.
You must consider who may potentially make a claim against your estate if you leave them
What are the biggest pitfalls to avoid when administering an estate/writing a will?
Within reason you can put anything you wish in your Will provided it makes sense, is certain,
has purpose and the beneficiaries are ascertainable. For example, it would not be possible
to leave your estate to the population of Newcastle-under-Lyme as this would be difficult to
ascertain exactly who would be entitled without a set period of time and boundaries.
A Will can be invalid if it is not signed correctly.
Administering an Estate:
You must ensure that all taxes are dealt with and time limits for payment of tax and
submission of returns are adhered to when administering an estate as HMRC likes to
You must correctly identify your Clients and all beneficiaries to avoid distributing the estate
to someone incorrectly.
All the correct information must be obtained to complete the papers to apply for probate,
particularly where Inheritance Tax is payable.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given
Never give advice over the telephone. It’s much better to see someone face-to-face as you
are more likely to get all of the details and advise correctly.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Helping people and preparing Estate Accounts.
Biggest career achievement
I started my work life as an office junior in a firm of solicitors at the age of 16, so my biggest
achievement was qualifying as a Solicitor, whilst having two young children and working full
time. My next big achievement was undertaking the exam route to obtaining full
membership of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
